How we train: Sample curriculum

SAFE regularly conducts training both at our facility outside Seattle and in locations around the world. Single and multi-day courses are available. For customers who choose to complete training at our facility, SAFE’s close proximity to the Puget Sound provides many opportunities for underway exercises and practical application of maritime skills.

Along with training, documentation packages are available for our customers. SAFE can provide technical manuals, operations manuals, maintenance procedures, and boat information booklets.

Some examples of training courses include:

Vessel Familiarization and Navigation Fundamentals
This introduction to boat operations course will provide the customer with a basic understanding of their vessel, its systems, and the relevant operational characteristics. With this class students will advance their knowledge as it relates to the safe navigation of their boat in an operational environment. Students will train in customers’ own vessels on Puget Sound.

Finish Installation
Learn how to install, repair, and adjust windows, doors, hatches, and finish coatings. This course will focus on maintaining vessel sub-systems in order to address crew comfort and aesthetics. This class does not cover collar finishing.

Rigging Troubleshooting
This course provides familiarization on electrical rigging, wire runs, installed electrical equipment, and wire termination procedures. This course will give students hands-on experience with wiring vessels during different stages of production. By knowing how the vessel was built, students will gain a better understanding of how to service wiring issues that may arise.

Collar Installation and Repair
As the cornerstone feature on all SAFE boats, the collar system is an integral component for reliable and safe operation of the vessel. This course will instruct students on the proper method for collar inspection, maintenance, repair, removal and installation.

Navigation System/Electronics Operation
Learn how to operate the electronics package installed on the vessel. This course focuses primarily on radar/chart plotting units, but also discusses VHF/UHF communication, GPS theory, course plotting, and depth sounder operation.
